Safe Spring Replacement Across Vancouver Island

Garage door springs carry the full weight of your door every time it opens and closes, typically 10,000 to 15,000 cycles over their lifespan. When one breaks, the door can become impossible to open or, worse, come crashing down unexpectedly. When you need garage door spring replacement on Vancouver Island, one call is all it takes.

At Garage Door Doctor Canada Ltd., our certified technicians have replaced thousands of springs across Vancouver Island over 30+ years. We carry a full range of torsion and extension springs in our service vehicles so most jobs are done in a single visit, often the same day you call.

We always replace springs in pairs, even if only one has broken: a spring that's failed once means its partner is close behind.

Signs Your Springs Need Replacing

  • Door feels unusually heavy when lifted manually
  • Door won't open or only opens a few inches
  • Loud bang from the garage (a spring snapping)
  • Visible gap or separation in the spring coil
  • Door closes too fast or slams shut
  • Opener strains or runs but door doesn't move
  • Door appears crooked or uneven when opening

Torsion or Extension: We Service Both

The type of spring your door uses depends on its age, size, and design. Our techs identify the right replacement and install it correctly.

Torsion Springs

Mounted horizontally above the door opening on a metal shaft, torsion springs use torque to counterbalance the door's weight. They're the standard in most modern installations: stronger, longer-lasting, and safer than extension springs because they're contained on a shaft if they break.

Most residential doors use one or two torsion springs. We stock a full range of sizes and wire gauges to match your door's exact weight and travel.

Most common in newer doors

Extension Springs

Installed along the horizontal tracks on either side of the door, extension springs stretch and contract as the door moves. They're typically found on older or lighter doors and require safety cables threaded through them to contain the spring if it snaps.

We replace extension springs in pairs and always check or install safety cables at the same time. It's a step many cut-rate services skip.

Our Spring Replacement Process

Every spring replacement follows a precise, safety-first process: no shortcuts, no guesswork.

1

Secure the Door

We clamp and secure the door before touching the spring system to prevent any unexpected movement.

2

Release Tension Safely

Remaining tension is carefully released using winding bars, never improvised tools. This is where DIY attempts most often go wrong.

3

Full System Inspection

We inspect cables, drums, bearings, and tracks while we're in there. If something else is close to failing, we'll tell you upfront.

4

Install New Springs

We fit properly rated springs matched to your door's exact weight: both sides, every time.

5

Balance & Test

We manually balance the door, test full travel, verify opener force settings, and make adjustments until everything runs smoothly.

This Is Not a DIY Job

Garage door springs are under hundreds of pounds of stored tension. A spring that releases suddenly can cause serious injury or property damage in an instant. We see the aftermath of DIY attempts regularly. It's not worth the risk. Our techs have the training, tools, and experience to do it safely every time.
