Types of Springs

Torsion or Extension: We Service Both

The type of spring your door uses depends on its age, size, and design. Our techs identify the right replacement and install it correctly.

Torsion Springs

Mounted horizontally above the door opening on a metal shaft, torsion springs use torque to counterbalance the door's weight. They're the standard in most modern installations: stronger, longer-lasting, and safer than extension springs because they're contained on a shaft if they break.

Most residential doors use one or two torsion springs. We stock a full range of sizes and wire gauges to match your door's exact weight and travel.

Extension Springs

Installed along the horizontal tracks on either side of the door, extension springs stretch and contract as the door moves. They're typically found on older or lighter doors and require safety cables threaded through them to contain the spring if it snaps.

We replace extension springs in pairs and always check or install safety cables at the same time. It's a step many cut-rate services skip.

Springs are rated in cycles rather than years, typically 10,000 to 15,000 for a standard spring. One cycle is the door going up and back down. A household that opens the door twice a day is looking at somewhere in the range of fifteen years; a family coming and going six or eight times a day will get through that far sooner. If your door is the main entrance to the house, expect to replace springs more than once in the time you own it.

Yes. High-cycle springs are wound from heavier wire and rated well above a standard spring, often double. They cost more up front and are worth it on a door that gets heavy daily use or on a door that is awkward to reach. If you have already replaced springs once and it felt too soon, mention it when you book and we will price both options.

Cold makes steel contract and become less forgiving, so a spring already near the end of its cycle life tends to give up on the first hard frost rather than in July. The break was coming either way, the cold just picks the morning. This is why a door that felt slightly heavy in autumn is worth looking at before winter sets in properly.

We check them on every spring job and tell you what we find. Cables, bearings and drums wear on roughly the same clock as the springs, and they are far cheaper to do while the door is already stripped down than as a separate call six months later. We will not swap parts that have life left in them, but if a cable is frayed or a bearing is dry we will say so.

Please don't. The springs carry almost the entire weight of the door, so with one broken you are lifting the full weight yourself, which on a double door is well over a hundred kilograms. People injure their backs and lose fingertips doing this. Leave the door down, park on the driveway, and call us. If you absolutely must get a vehicle out, wait for us to do it safely.

A properly wound spring should not. We set the tension and balance the door before we leave, then test it by hand at several points to make sure it holds position on its own. If a door starts drifting down or feels heavy again within weeks of a spring replacement, that is not normal settling and we want to hear about it.
